The month of June carries special significance in so many quarters: June brides, summer heat, family vacations, and a lot of history, such as Juneteenth, Pride Month, and for the Philippine community, Philippine Independence celebrated on June 12th.
Our Philippine community held multiple celebrations starting with the painstaking transport of a near-century-old “Kalesa” (horse-drawn carriage) from its Lantana quarters to the Philippine Consulate in Houston where it was notably featured during the Consulate’s June 12th ceremonies. On the day itself, Consul General Jerril Santos presided over the solemn event in Houston, the Filipino Leaders Coalition of North Texas held a flag-raising ceremony in Carrollton, a live virtual event with moving poetry reading from our community in Rio Grande Valley, Karilagan Cultural Group performs the Tinikling live on network TV in San Antonio, young leaders of MALAYA held a picnic in Richardson, Filipina queens held court with Miss Philippines Universe 2021 in Dallas, and many more from organizations across Texas where our chamber regions were prominently represented.
This June newsletter is rich with photos, clips, and stories about these events, features, and many more.
We hope you enjoy this issue. Happy Philippine Independence Month!
